The Council of States had already reluctantly approved a national, non-public transparency register for companies in the winter session and significantly streamlined the new law. Foundations, associations and trustees are to be exempt from the obligation to register.

The National Council followed this line on most points on Thursday. The tenor was that the streamlined bill should result in as little additional effort as possible for the Swiss economy.

Thanks to the register, the authorities should be able to determine more quickly and reliably who is actually behind a legal structure. The aim is to prevent companies in Switzerland from being used for money laundering or to conceal assets.

The matter will go back to the Council of States.
