Greece’s Anti-Money Laundering Authority has frozen stolen cryptocurrency in a landmark investigation, marking the country’s first seizure of crypto assets identified as criminal proceeds.
The case, which has attracted global attention, prompted a public alert from the US FBI confirming the freeze of suspicious digital assets.
The investigation was sparked last month by a suspicious transaction on a Greek cryptocurrency exchange. Authorities traced a large Ethereum transfer in a user’s wallet to the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February, the largest crypto theft to date, surpassing the 2022 Ronin Network breach of $620 million in Ethereum and USD Coin.
The Authority issued a Seizure Order for the wallet and its assets, with documentation sent to the Prosecutorial Authority for further investigation.
