Two Mexican nationals were sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison for running a money laundering scheme that moved drug money from Texas to Mexico, the Department of Justice said Monday, July 21.

Mauricio Anzures-Zarate, 53, from Mexico City, and Beatriz Salcedo-Carreon, 63, from Guadalajara, pleaded guilty earlier this year. They must also pay over $1 million and $887,000, respectively.

The pair used local businesses in Laredo to clean drug money collected in different U.S. cities. The businesses took the cash as payment for goods sent to Mexico. Then, cartel members in Mexico got the money through peso transfers, avoiding carrying cash across the border.

The DEA worked with IRS agents and law enforcement in Mexico to arrest and bring Salcedo-Carreon to the U.S.

Eight other people have already been convicted in this case.

The U.S. attorneys and Justice Department lawyers handled the case.
