The former governor of the Mexican state of Chihuahua has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering.
César Duarte was governor of the northern Mexican state, which borders Texas and New Mexico, from 2010 until 2016.
In a statement, Mexico’s attorney general says authorities in Chihuahua arrested a suspect accused of a money laundering scheme that involved concealing funds diverted from the state. The Associated Press confirmed with a federal agent the suspect is Duarte.
Duarte was extradited by the United States three years ago to face separate embezzlement charges in Mexico and was serving time under house arrest for that case.
Mexico’s attorney general says the United States recently granted Mexico approval to prosecute Duarte for the money laundering charges as well.
